Brazen New Year’s Eve Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Set for its 11th annual running as part of a pair of races offered around the New Year in Northern California’s Anthony Chabot Regional Park, the Brazen New Year’s Eve Half Marathon follows the same course used a few days later at the Brazen New Year’s Day Half Marathon — only in the opposite direction.

Like on New Year’s Day, runners will follow an out-and-back loop course that starts and finishes at the Lake Chabot Marina, which lies at the southernmost point of the lake, near both Lake Chabot Road and Fairmount Drive.

From there, they’ll follow a counter-clockwise route along several of the park’s hilly, scenic hiking trails, including roughly 30 percent paved trails and about 70 percent dirt hiking trails.

Runners will need to be ready for the possibility of a wet-weather run and some muddy terrain around the lake, as rain is always possible this time of year in the Oakland area. However, the hills aren’t quite as challenging as some other trail races in the local area, but still provide enough of a challenge to make the race interesting.

Race Weather & Climate

Located on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay, about a 20-minute drive south from Oakland, the city of Castro Valley lies just south of Chabot Regional Park and typically sees cool, mild weather this time of year.

On race day (Dec. 31), the average low is 41ºF and the average high is 58ºF.
