Filled with 25 miles of hiking trails along the Santa Ana River just to the west of downtown Riverside, Hidden Valley Wildlife Area is the setting for the annual Run the River for The Ridge race, which features the Peppermint Ridge Half Marathon as well as a 5K and a 1K event, all of which will help raise money for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The race begins at the Hidden Valley Nature Center, near the entrance to the 1,500-acre wildlife area, which offers residents of this busy area of Los Angeles a peaceful retreat from the city and its traffic, with ample views of the river and the bluffs overlooking it.
From the starting line near the nature center, runners will first head east along the Santa Ana River Trail, which stretches some 30 miles through Riverside and nearby Orange County. They’ll follow the trail into the neighborhood just east of the wildlife area, all the way to the first turnaround point just past Van Buren Boulevard.
After that, runners will retrace their steps all the way back to the nature center, passing by the starting line as they head west along the trail into the western areas of the park. They’ll hit two more turnaround points before heading back toward the starting line at the nature center, which they’ll pass by one final time to the last turnaround point, near the Santa Ana River.
Then it’s back to the nature center for the race finish. The trail itself features paved surfaces, about 12 feet wide, and organizers say it’s “rated as an intermediate to moderate run.”
