Sombrero Half Marathon 10k & 5k - Simi Valley CA

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 7th annual running of a race that’s as unique as it is fun, set against the picturesque backdrop of Simi Valley, CA. Get ready for a fantastic adventure along the Arroyo Bike path, a mostly flat and fast course that’s perfect for runners of all levels. But this event is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of National Hat Day, and a tribute to the rich and proud history of the Sombrero.

The word “sombrero” is derived from the Spanish “sombra,” meaning “shade” or “shadow.” Its origins can be traced back to 17th-century Spain. The Sombrero is not just a fashionable hat; it’s one of the largest and best hats for sun protection, an emblem of cultural significance. And let’s not forget the Mexican hat dance, often called Jarabe Tapatío, which is the national dance of Mexico, embodying the spirit of celebration and joy.

One of the highlights of this year’s event is the introduction of an “early start” option for half marathon runners. If you’re looking for a bit more time to finish and still want to join the post-race party, this is for you. The early start kicks off at 6 am on race day, but make sure to notify us in advance so we can capture your bib number for official timing stats. It’s worth noting that water stations won’t be fully operational until about 6:30 am, so come prepared for your hydration needs. Please also adhere to traffic laws when crossing streets since traffic control won’t be in place until 7 am.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a beginner, or a walker, this race offers a walker-friendly course with mostly flat terrain and just a few gentle rollers to keep things interesting. With plenty of water stations and a generous 4-hour time limit for the half marathon, you can take your time and soak in the beautiful scenery.

Middle of the pack runners seeking a PR (Personal Record) will find this race particularly appealing. The mostly flat course features some gentle rollers and ample room to make your move toward that coveted new PR.

Elite and advanced runners, get ready for a challenge on this mostly flat course with some mild rollers. You’ll find long stretches of flat terrain to really let loose and showcase your speed during the final miles.

Every runner, regardless of experience or speed, will receive a finisher medal, a race day athlete t-shirt, a race day Sombrero (because it’s a Sombrero race, after all), and post-race munchies to refuel.

Awards will be presented to the top 3 overall male and female finishers in each race, with special awards awaiting them. Additionally, the top 3 in each age group for all race distances will be recognized for their outstanding achievements.

So, put on your running shoes and your most festive Sombrero because this is not just a race; it’s a celebration of history, culture, and the spirit of running. Get ready to have a blast, and maybe even set a new PR, on this mostly flat, fast, and fun course along the Arroyo Bike path in Simi Valley, CA.
