Summer Breeze Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Saturday, July 29, 2023 • San Leandro, CA • Course Map

With more than 1,700 acres of marshes, wetlands and public trails, the Hayward Regional Shoreline along the San Francisco Bay makes the perfect change of pace for the annual late summer running of San Leandro’s Summer Breeze Half Marathon, 10K & 5K.

The race follows a very flat and fast course, especially compared to most of the rest of the events managed by its race organizer, the locally based Brazen Racing — which manages several other half marathon events that take place around the Bay Area throughout the year, including the Hellyer Half Marathon in March and the Trail Quake Half Marathon, which takes place in Saratoga in June.

Instead of miles of single-track trails through hilly and sometimes mountainous forest areas, the Summer Breeze offers a refreshing mostly trail run that never strays too far from the water along the Hayward Seashore area, which features a mixture of paved and gravel trails that wind their way through its salt and freshwater marshes.

Cobbled together over the years from a combination of natural marshes along the bay as well as man-made marshes (part of restoration and enhancement projects to bring the area closer to its original, natural state), Hayward today is a magnet for runners, walkers, hikers, bikers and fishermen and women, who venture out onto its five miles of trails along the seashore and wander out to watch the birds who nest here throughout the year.

Runners head out on an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at the San Leandro Marina Park, a small 30-acre park that lies alongside the shoreline overlooking the San Francisco Bay, and hugs the shoreline for the entire race route.

From there, runners follow southward along the shore, all the way down to the turnaround point just north of the San Mateo Bridge. Once runners hit the turn, they then head back along the exact route they’ve just run, in the opposite direction back up to the start/finish line at the San Leandro Marina Park. Made up of a combination of paved trails and gravel trails, the terrain is virtually flat for the entire race.

Along the way, the route will feature gorgeous views of both the bay and the hills of San Francisco and the East Bay off in the distance, and will bring runners past Hayward Regional Shoreline park twice (both going out, and coming back in).
