Lined with palm trees along the Southern California coastline, Ventura’s Promenade Park serves as the race start and finish line area for the Surfers Point Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, which is set to make its 6th annual running this year on a course that will serve as a Boston Marathon qualifying race.
The course is very flat and walker-friendly, organizers say, adding that it features a 7-hour course time limit for the full marathon. Most of the race takes place either within shouting distance of the beachfront or along the beachfront boardwalk itself, as the race will start overlooking the waves crashing along the shoreline of Promenade Park, which lies just down the beach from Surfer’s Point Park and the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
From there, the half marathon route starts runners off by heading west, first along the boardwalk and then turning onto the bike path that winds through Emma Wood State Beach/Seaside Wilderness Park.
The course keeps runners on the bike path for the next couple of miles, and turns onto the Old Rincon Highway just before runners pass the mile 3 marker, still overlooking the shoreline.
Runners head northwest along the Old Rincon Highway and stay on the highway for the next few miles, until they reach the half-way turnaround point of the race near Solimar Beach Drive. Then, they turn around and retrace their steps all the way back to Promenade Park, returning to the bike path through Seaside Wilderness Park and the boardwalk.
After this couple of miles, the course brings them back toward the beachfront toward Promenade Park, past the finish line, and south along the boardwalk to San Buenaventura State Beach before making a loop and returning to the finish line at Promenade Park
Expect a fast and mostly flat run with plenty of breeze from the Pacific Ocean — the lowest elevation along the course is about 4 to 5 feet above sea level, while the highest (between miles 11 and 12) hits just over 70 feet above sea level.
