The Santa Barbara Half Marathon

Saturday, June 29, 2019 • Santa Barbara, CA • Course Map

activeregisterNow set for its 39th annual running — the race returned a few years ago after a five-year hiatus — the Santa Barbara Half Marathon is one of this city’s iconic races, featuring a pair of out-and-back stretches with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean as well as runs along bike paths and through some of the city’s most picturesque seaside parks.

The race, which benefits the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony Education Fund, follows an out-and-back route that starts and finishes along Shoreline Drive near its intersection with Loma Alta Drive, overlooking Leadbetter Beach.

From there, runners first head toward the east and northeast, making their way along Shoreline Drive and Cabrillo Boulevard, running past Stearns Wharf, Chase Palm Park, the Andree Clark Bird Refuge and the Santa Barbara Cemetery along the way.

They’ll follow the first part of the route onto Channel Drive out toward the Four Seasons Resort, where they’ll make their first turnaround and then retrace their steps back toward where they started.

Before they make it back to the starting line, the race will take runners off Cabrillo Boulevard and onto the bike path that runs along the beach, passing by East Beach, Mission Creek and Stearns Wharf again along the way.

When runners make it back to Shoreline Drive, they’ll begin the final four miles that run out to West Mesa and back, through residential neighborhoods that will take them nearly all the way to Arroyo Burro Beach County Park and back.

The race features an early starting time for walkers — 6:30 AM, versus a 7:00 AM start for those running the half marathon. There’s also a 5K that starts after the half marathon.

Race Weather & Climate

Often promoted as “America’s Riviera”, Santa Barbara features a warm Mediterranean climate. Because the city lies along the ocean, the summer temperatures are often more moderate than its inland counterparts due to breezes, and rainfall is rare here this time of year.

On race day (June 29), the average low is 57ºF and the average high is 73ºF.
