Set for its 14th annual running this year, Fresno’s Two Cities Marathon and Half Marathons once gave runners the choice of two separate half marathon routes to run at the race — the Fresno Half Marathon or the Clovis Half Marathon, both of which followed out-and-back courses that start and finish at Woodward Park.
Now runners don’t get that choice, but the Clovis course remains fast and flat, with elevation holding steady between 300 and 400 feet for the entire race.
All the Two Cities races begin at Clovis Community College, north of downtown Clovis (or Old Town Clovis as it’s known to locals). From there, the course heads west on East Behymer Avenue for the first mile before heading south toward the Clovis Fresno Rail Trail.
The rail trail, which connects Clovis to nearby Fresno and provides an easy way to get around the area on foot or bike, is where runners will spend much of the race. Runners will run along the V-shaped portion of the trail, running along East Shepherd Avenue for about a mile before making a V-shape along the trail, passing Railroad Park and Clovis Botanical Gardens along the way.
Once runners reach the Dry Creek Trailhead near mile 10, the course returns to the road, and runners will weave their way back to the finish line at the community college.
Whether they’re running the half or the full marathon (or the relay), runners will have 6.5 hours to complete their race. After the time limit expires, race organizers will no longer be monitoring the course, and so runners will need to be sure to complete the race by 2:00 PM.
More than 3,100 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in all races combined each year, including more than 1,200 finishers in the Clovis Half and just over 1,000 in the Fresno Half.
