Set for its fifth annual running along the Van Bibber Creek Trail near the city of Arvada, the All-Out Polar Prowl Half Marathon is the first in a series of nine half marathons, 10Ks and 5K races that run throughout the Denver area each year.
One of the area’s smaller running events — last year’s Polar Prowl saw 430 runners cross the finish line in all three distances combined — the race is run through a park that’s known for its biking and hiking trails, and also features a few lakes and plentiful rolling hills.
Runners start the race just above Soda Lakes on the western side of the park, near the Indian Paintbrush Campground and Soda Lake Stable. From there, they’ll follow largely a counter-clockwise loop route around the park, including stretches past the Fox Hollow and Homestead golf courses, as well as along the edge of Bear Creek Lake.
The course’s biggest hills occur between miles 2 and 3 and then again between miles 8 and 9, as runners will be running the same hills in the opposite direction. The course features an overall elevation drop between the start and the half-way point, elevation that you’ll gain again as you’re running the second half.
Even though you’re only a handful of miles away from downtown Denver, the scenery within the park makes you feel a long way away from the city, according to visitors who’ve stayed and camped there.
Organizers say the race is run on a combination of asphalt and concrete, and that they’ll cordon off a section of the shoulder with cones for the running lane.
