If you’re a sports fan who watches ESPN, you’ll likely get a kick out of this late-summer race, which benefits Fisher House Connecticut and unfolds along a loop route in Bristol, Conn., where the home studios of the cable television sports empire are based.
The mission of this Bristol-based nonprofit organization — whose tagline is “helping heroes, helping families” — is to build and maintain long-term housing for the families of seriously injured soldiers near military and VA hospitals around the country.
To date, they’ve built more than 50 Fisher Houses nationwide, and save the families of military veterans lodging and transportation costs during their family members’ hospital stays.
Runners start the out-and-back course for the race just west of downtown Bristol, along Clark Avenue. From there, the course follows a counter-clockwise route through the city, with stretches that wind through Rockwell Park, through the heart of Bristol and along Memorial Boulevard for a long out-and-back in Memorial Boulevard Park.
After that, runners head back out north of the city, into the more residential and rural areas, past the Birge Pond and the Hoppers Area, and then back around Hill Street and Casey Road, back to the finish line on Clark Avenue. Organizers describe the course as “beautiful, scenic and challenging,” especially in the race’s second half, when the biggest hills occur.
There’s a climb of more than 700 feet between the low point of the race, around the mile 6 marker, and the peak elevation, which lies between the 10th and 11th mile markers, along Chapel Street. After that, the race descends along a gradual decline for the final few miles in to the race finish.
