Tackle the Trail, a running race that has been held for over 10 consecutive years, is one of northeast Connecticut’s most beloved and unique events. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning natural scenery provide a refreshing and rejuvenating respite from the city’s hustle and bustle, making it perfect for those seeking a tranquil running experience.
What sets Tackle the Trail apart from other races is its unique scenery and location. The course is a point-to-point race that starts in the beautiful town of Pomfret, where runners begin their journey through a mix of terrain. They begin on the flat Airline Trail before transitioning to a technical single track.
Along the way, runners can take in the unspoiled beauty of Connecticut’s hidden gems, including stunning covered bridges, serene rivers, and tranquil woodlands. The course also takes runners through several scenic landmarks, such as Culvert to Trail under Route 44, Pedestrian Bridge over Route 169, and Wright’s Crossing.
The race starts at Brooklyn Rd, Pomfret, CT, and finishes at the Hale YMCA, Putnam.
The course offers runners sufficient challenges, with a total elevation change of +350ft. Runners will cross town roads several times, including Culvert to Trail under Holmes Rd, Pedestrian Bridge over Needle’s Eye Rd, Culvert to Trail under Modock Rd, Culvert to Trail under River Rd, and Town Farm Rd.
With an exciting course like this, runners need to take note of one vital aspect: it can be wet. There’s one particularly wet portion (2/10ths of a mile) close to the end of the final leg.
Watch your footing when navigating the course here.
After crossing the finish line, you can join the post-race festival at the Hale YMCA. Celebrate your achievement with free beer, delicious food, and live music – and don’t forget about those massage sessions to help you loosen back up!
