Runners follow an out-and-back loop course at West Virginia’s Freedom’s Run Half Marathon, which starts and finishes in downtown Shepherdstown and takes runners across the Potomac River into Virginia and onto the historic grounds of the Antietam National Battlefield Park, the site of the infamous 1862 Civil War battle. About 4 1/2 of the race’s 13.1 miles take runners through the battlefield park, past several of its historic sites including the Burnside Bridge.
