Runners follow a hilly and challenging out-and-back course at Danville’s 12:1 Run Half Marathon, which also features a 5K and a 10K race that takes runners into Geode State Park, named for the rocks whose sparkling crystals inside draw rock and gem hunters from around the country every year to this corner of southeastern Iowa in search of Keokuk geodes. Roughly half of the 13.1-mile route unfolds along the shoreline of the lake inside the park, providing a scenic, tree-shaded route.
