Runners follow a long, straight out-and-back course for the half marathon that starts at the trailhead in Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which lies just off Route 17 near the state’s southern border with North Carolina. The race route follows the park’s Dismal Swamp Canal Trail south from the starting line down to the half-way turnaround point, and then back to the start for the race finish line.
