Runners start the out-and-back course for the Heart of Cool Trail Run just south of Cool, Calif., along Cave Valley Road next to Northside Elementary School. From there, the course heads out onto the trails that wind through the gorgeous Northern California foothills here, along the Olmstead Loop Trail, Wendell Robie Trail, Training Hill Trail, and Knickerbocker Creek Trail before heading back around to the elementary school, for the race finish back on Cave Valley Road.
