Runners follow an out-and-back loop course at the Pictured Rocks Road Race, which starts and finishes at Bayshore Park, along the shoreline of Lake Superior. From there, the course takes runners through town and along a combination of paved roads — many of which are hilly, organizers note — and dirt-surface trails through the forested areas along the lakeshore. The most challenging part of the race is the trek up “Stink Hill,” which persuades many runners to walk up the hill, at least for a stretch.
