Runners start the out-and-back course for the half marathon in downtown Salem, at the intersection of East Main Street and South Broad Street. From there, the course — which is designed for the first-time half marathoner, organizers say, and features a 4-hour course time limit — follows many twists and turns along city streets, with stretches through the campus of Roanoke College and along the Roanoke River in the second half of the race.
