Sunshine State Races Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Saturday, January 14, 2017 • West Palm Beach, FL • Course Map

With temperatures that are likely to be in the 70s and gorgeous views of the neighborhoods along Lake Worth between the Florida mainland and Palm Beach across the water, the all-new Sunshine State Races Half Marathon makes its 6th annual running, providing a welcome break from the cold that will no doubt still be lingering across much of the country this time of year.

The race — which is open to runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes — follows an out-and-back course largely along the Lake Worth waterfront in West Palm Beach, with the starting and finish line in front of Meyer Amphitheatre on Evernia Street.

From there, the course first heads north along Flagler Drive, taking runners past the marinas and boats out on the water around the Flagler Memorial Bridge almost all the way to the Palm Beach Maritime Museum between Butler and Picadilly Streets, where they make the first turnaround to head back south along Flagler.

Runners keep heading south for just over the next six miles down the shoreline, along both Flagler Drive and Washington Road, all the way south down to the right turn onto Gregory Road, which is followed by two more right turns — on Federal Highway and Summa Street — before the race route turns runners left to put them back onto Flagler, and the return route back to Meyer Amphitheatre for the race finish.

All the way up and down the course, runners will get to see what makes the waterfront neighborhoods along Flagler so sought after by both visitors and those who live here, as they’ll pass by El Cid, the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic University and the Royal Park Bridge before turning back onto Evernia to head into the finish line.

Runners and walkers will have 3 1/2 hours to complete the 13.1 miles of the half marathon, while the 5K course will be open for one hour.

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit several locally based charitable/non-profit organizations that provide food to local children in need in Palm Beach County, especially those receiving free or reduced price lunches in school, which are estimated at about 50 percent of the children in the county’s school system.
