Stars & Stripes Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Saturday, June 24, 2023 • Hoffman Estates, IL • Course Map

Part of a weekend filled with racing events, the Stars & Stripes in partnership with the Village of Hoffman Estates is set to bring runners, skaters, walkers, cyclists and kids out for a two-day event designed to bring together families and the community to promote better health and fitness.

The race begins to the north of Hoffman Estates, outside the Paul Douglas Forest Preserve, an 1,800-acre park filled with untouched grasslands and wetlands that has become well-known as a preserve for many species of grassland birds, with many wide-open areas free of trees to provide protection from predator raptors.

The out-and-back course for the half marathon starts and finishes on AT&T Center Drive, and takes runners first along a couple of short winding loops along the U-shaped road before sending runners out onto Lakewood Boulevard, where they turn right and head toward the Paul Douglas Preserve.

After crossing Huntington Boulevard, runners then head onto the trail inside the preserve, which they follow for the next few miles as it winds its way along the western, northern and eastern edges of the grassland areas.

When they meet the intersection with Central Road, runners turn left and head east along Central until the next turn on Roselle Road, which they follow nearly all the way up to Algonquin Road, where they hit the turnaround point and then run back along the route they’ve just covered back to Central Road.

The last three miles of the race then take runners back through the southern edge of the preserve to Huntington Boulevard, where they turn right and head north and then re-join Lakewood Boulevard, which takes them back in to the finish line.

The terrain for the race features a combination of paved roads as well as paved and dirt park trails, and features rolling hills throughout, but no dramatic uphill or downhill stretches.

It baffles me. Here on your website you recommend what not do for exercises. Arm curls, etc. What not to do over 40. But, in the heat of the summer, you endanger the participants by having a race at the peak of the heat. How many runners needed medical attention this year because of the heat? Most events start in the cool of the morning. Last year the heat hit over 90 degrees during the run. This year we are living through a warmer summer than last year with high humidity. I would hope that in the future you decide to change the start time to a more logical time and not push your participants to endanger themselves. Your site is hypocritical. Don’t do arm curls, but lets do a half marathon in the peak heat of the day. Please reconsider your start time of the half to something that makes common sense before more people get hurt unnecessarily. Is the hospital really involved to get people into a healthy lifestyle or get more customers?
