Famous as the hometown of Abraham Lincoln, Morris Day and Bobby McFerrin, this home of more than 200,000 people plays host in the fall to the Springfield Clinic Springfield Marathon, which also features a half marathon, 3/4 marathon, quarter marathon and a four-person marathon relay.
All four races will follow an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at the University of Illinois-Springfield, whose more than 5,000 students go to class on a campus that backs up onto the shoreline of Lake Springfield.
From there, runners will wind their way first through campus and then onto the bridge that crosses the lake, where they’ll head over into Center Park and the Henson Robinson Zoo.
Next, the course follows a brief, L-shaped out-and-back along East Lake Shore Drive and Honeywell Road, where runners reach the turnaround point.
After that, the race heads back along roads the runners have just run, taking them back across the lake and into the campus of Lincoln Land Community College, keeping them close to the lakeshore along the next few miles.
The last few miles of the race bring runners back into the UIS campus, along Shepherd Road, Toronto Road, 11th Street and Ernest Hemingway Drive, followed by stretches along Eliza Farnham Drive and Richard Wright Drive, named for the famous 19th-century-era novelist, abolitionist and feminist, and the author of the legendary novels Black Boy and Native Son, respectively.
Most of the race features only gentle rolling hills, offering runners an excellent chance to record excellent times.
The race, which is sponsored by the Springfield Clinic, will also offer training programs — 18 weeks for the full marathon, 16 weeks for the half marathon and 10 weeks for the 10K (see the race website for more info).
