Inspired by the success of women’s races like the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco each October, Indiana’s capital city got its own women-only race event in 2011 with the debut of the Indianapolis Women’s Half Marathon & 5K.
Now set for its 9th annual running, the race takes runners on an out-and-back course that loops through the city’s downtown districts and follows a stretch along the banks of the White River, which flows through the city.
Starting near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis, near Monument Circle right in the heart of the city’s downtown district near its state capitol buildings, runners head first south through downtown.
In the opening miles, runners pass by some of the city’s most notable landmarks — including Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and where Super Bowl XLVI was played in 2012, and later runners pass by the Indiana War Memorial and Veterans Memorial Park, which commemorate the sacrifice of Indiana soldiers in all of the wars America has fought over the past century.
From there, runners then turn left on West Michigan Street and head northwest out of the city, past the Indiana University campus on their way toward Bush Stadium, the home of the city’s minor league baseball team the Indianapolis Indians — and which served as the primary filming location for the 1988 movie “Eight Men Out.”
Once past the baseball stadium, runners then make their way northward up and around the edges of Taggart Riverside Park, running all the way south along the White River Parkway, where they’ll have views of the river on the right and the tree-lined parkland areas of the baseball fields and golf course inside the park on the left.
The second half of the race begins once runners re-join Stadium Drive and make their way back southeast toward downtown. Runners pass by the university campus and head back toward Monument Circle, and then turn left on Michigan Rd and Vermont St. into the finish.
