The Lake Norman Half Marathon Elf Classic is a holiday wish fulfilled. Now, runners who enjoy the ever-popular summer Lake Norman Forest Run have a winter race they can tackle, as well! The event celebrates its second running in 2023.
Lake Norman is the largest manmade lake in North Carolina, and the surrounding state park covers approximately 17 miles of its shoreline. Both the half marathon and the 5K will be held on asphalt roads within the park.
Beginning and ending at the waterfront, this relatively flat-and-fast race tours half marathoners throughout the southern peninsula of Lake Norman State Park. Expect abundant views of wildlife and natural forested beauty on this peaceful early winter race.
With a 3-hour course limit for the half marathon, participants should expect to maintain an average pace of approximately 13:44 minutes per mile.
The race supports the Human Health Project, which issues grants to local food shelters. Runners are asked to bring a non-perishable food item on race day to donate.
Take Note
The race takes place at the beach in Lake Norman State Park—plan to meet there for the run, not at the visitors center.
Race Weather & Climate
While December weather in North Carolina is milder than in many other parts of the country, expect a winter chill nonetheless! In Statesville, average temperatures at this time of year range from 51°F to 33°F.
