Don’t let your New Year’s resolution to tackle a half marathon pass you by! The Last Chance Marathon & Half Marathon, held on the final day of the year, is the best way to leave 2023 in the dust.
During the race, participants experience scenic views and “just enough hills to make it interesting.” The half marathon is an out-and-back course. (Those running the full marathon will tackle the course twice.)
The Last Chance Marathon & Half Marathon is held on Bellingham’s Interurban trail, starting at Fairhaven Park Pavilion and proceeding to the turnaround point at Clayton Beach. Throughout the course, the surface is packed gravel over an old railroad bed, with the brief exception of a three-quarter-mile section of double track trails.
Participants are advised to carry their own water and aid throughout the race. There are two aid stations along the course, as well as a start/finish line aid station for full marathoners. However, these areas are spaced generously apart, with aid approximately every 3.5 miles.
After you conquer your distance, celebrate your accomplishment with a feast of soups, sandwiches, and snacks at the finish line.
Take Note
Love running with Rover? This race is dog-friendly. However, organizers ask that participants who choose to run with a canine companion start near the back of the pack, so as to not interfere with other participants. Please also make sure your dog is leashed, friendly, and accustomed to long runs!
Race Weather & Climate
Expect to encounter cold and cloudy December weather in Bellingham. Race organizers warn that snow on race day is also a possibility. At this time of year, average temperatures range from 43°F to 34°F.
