Set for its 13th annual running along the shores of Lake Auburn here in the “Twin Cities” region of southwestern Maine — named for Lewiston and Auburn, the two cities that lie right next to each other along the banks of the Androscoggin River — the Lake Auburn Half Marathon unfolds around the lake and features views of the nearby hills, mountains and forests throughout.
Runners will start the race at the Lost Valley Ski Resort, which lies to the west side of Lake Auburn.
From there, runners will head away from the ski resort and then north along Whitman Spring Road for the first several miles and most scenic part of the race. After reaching the northern point of Lake Auburn, the course continues south along Lake Shore Drive, opening up to the water before a brief stretch of forests.
The second half of the race takes runners along the southern part of the lake, following Turner Road and then on to the hilliest section of the course along Gracelawn Road and Summer Street, before coasting downhill to the finish line back at the ski resort.
Race Weather & Climate
Located near the state’s southwestern corner, about 30 miles southwest of the capital Augusta and roughly 34 miles north of Portland, Auburn typically sees some of its mildest weather of the year in September, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 307deg;F (in 1965) and as high as 97°F (in 1937).
On race day (Sept. 8), the average low is 53ºF and the average high is 72ºF.
