Part of a series of half marathon, 10K, 5K and triathlon events known as the Iron Girl series — starting with its flagship half marathon in Clearwater, Fla., and concluding with a 10K & 5K race in Del Mar, Calif. — the Iron Girl Columbia Half Marathon & Family 5K is set for its 4th annual running this year.
The race is set to take runners on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at The Mall in Columbia, from the Howard Hughes parking lot along Little Patuxent Parkway.
From there, runners will make their way along the winding Little Patuxent Parkway west through this planned community that lies about halfway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., past the campus of Howard County Community College and in the direction of the Clarksville Environmental Area, which is part of a more than 1,000-acre park on the western edge of Columbia.
Runners keep heading west along Little Patuxent into the tree-lined residential neighborhoods along the edge of the park, along mostly gently rolling hills on paved streets past homes, parks and shopping centers.
Stretches along Little Patuxent are followed by Watch Chain Way, Harmel Drive and Cedar Lane to about the half-way point of the race, where runners turn left onto Harriet Tubman Lane and continue east toward Atholton High School. This stretch then turns south and becomes Martin Road, bringing runners north toward Quarterstaff Road.
The next few miles unfold through more residential areas as runners make their way back toward Hickory Ridge Road, where they’ll turn left and head west, to rejoin Little Patuxent Parkway and then begin the stretch that brings them east back toward the mall, where they’ll cross the race finish line near the stores overlooking Lake Kittamaqundi.
