Run 4 Shelter Half Marathon, 5K & 10K

Saturday, September 9, 2017 • Stevensville, MD • Course Map

Note: The half marathon event will not take place in 2017.

Runners make their way along a fast and flat paved course that alternates between the wooded trails of Kent Island here on Maryland’s eastern shore and the wide-open scenery of the waters of Chesapeake Bay here at the annual late summer running of the Run 4 Shelter Half Marathon, 10K & 5K race.

The race added a half marathon for the first time in 2011, along a route that shares the same start and finish line as the other races, next to Kent Island High School on the Kent Island Narrows.

From there, runners will follow what is known locally as the Cross Island Trail, a linear park filled with paved trails that winds through Queen Anne’s County from Kent Island Narrows all the way westward to Terrapin Nature Park, along the bay.

Alternating scenery marks the course throughout the 13.1-mile route, from paved roads to paved trails along the Cross Island Trail, to crushed gravel roads in spots and even oyster-shell trails in the “beach challenge” stretch along the bay.

Along the way, runners can expect to trek through wooded forest sections as well as stretches that look out onto the ponds and wetlands here along the Chesapeake Bay, between Chester and the Terrapin Park along the shore.

Thanks largely to its location, the race is nearly flat the entire way — the only real rises come from the footbridges runners cross in spots along the course, where the elevation rise is only minimal.

Open to both runners and walkers for each event, the race will feature staggered start times. All proceeds from the race benefit the Our Haven Shelter, a mission of the Queen Anne’s County Christian Assistance that provides shelter, meals and assistance to homeless men, women and children in the local area.
