runsignup-blueMaking the most of the surrounding terrain of the “Mid-Michigan” area, Lansing’s Capital City River Run Half Marathon & 5K takes runners along a course that’s a mix of urban city streets and big buildings as well as mile after mile of trails that run alongside the Grand River, which cuts right through the heart of the city.

Part of a weekend full of local events that also include a 5K run/walk and two children’s races, the race celebrates its 31st annual running in 2024 and just its 17th with the half-marathon distance.

For most of the event’s history since it began in 1993, the race was run as an out-and-back 10-miler along the city’s Lansing River Trail.

Though the course had shifted several times over the years, changes to the half marathon route which allowed race organizers to design a course that would show off many of the local area’s most noteworthy attractions, including Michigan State University, Scott Woods Park and Potter Park, and of course the Lansing River Trail for much of the race.

The terrain for the course is almost all paved surfaces throughout the race, as it is run along a combination of city streets, highways just outside town and the eight-mile Lansing River Trail, which runs along the Grand River and the Red Cedar River, along a mix of tree-lined paved pathways and pedestrian bridges.

From the starting line near the Lansing Center, the course follows an out-and-back Y-shaped course that takes runners south toward Scott Woods Park, then northeast toward Michigan State University, and then back west to the finish line.

Both the half-marathon and the 5K race welcome both runners and walkers, and both races share a starting time of 8:00 AM.

Race Weather & Climate

Though weather conditions are usually still pretty mild (and occasionally even warm) this time of year in the Lansing area, located in the center of southern Michigan and roughly half-way between Detroit and Grand Rapids, it can also get quite cool and even cold toward the end of the month.

Good afternoon, my friend Erica is signed up for this event and I am going to pick her packet up on Sunday morning, do I need to bring a copy of her ID and a signed note stating that I am ok to pick it up for her like they do at the CRIM or do you have a different system?
