Earth Day Run Half Marathon & Relay

Saturday, September 5, 2020 • St. Cloud, MNCourse Map

Note: Due the COVID-19 pandemic, the race organizers are offering a virtual run as a separate option to be run between April 24 and May 20, 2020. Runners who are already registered for the rescheduled September event receive the virtual run for free, so there’s no need to register separately.

Race organizers call this “Minnesota’s Premier Half Marathon event” and the number of attendees and spectators certainly give credence to that — the annual springtime running of the Scheels Earth Day Half Marathon welcomes about 1,500 runners for the half-marathon alone and roughly 3,000 runners in all to the streets of downtown St. Cloud.

Part of a two-day festival to celebrate Earth Day, the race starts and finishes downtown near the city’s River’s Edge Convention Center, and takes runners on an out-and-back tour of the city’s neighborhoods, parks and bridges crossing the stretch of the mighty Mississippi River that criss-crosses through the heart of the city.

In addition to the 13.1-mile half marathon for individual runners, there is also a 5K and a half marathon relay. In recent years, the race has also served in past years as the state’s USATF Half Marathon Championships.

By turns long, straight and flat as well as slightly hilly in spots, the race course features its biggest changes in elevation around the mid-way point of the race, when runners will experience really the only drop of any significant elevation change throughout the 13.1-mile course. The last few miles of the race are largely fast and flat as runners make their way into the finish line.

The half marathon and relay will start on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, while the 5K and 1K will take place the previous Friday evening.

Race Weather & Climate

Set about 60 miles northwest of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the city of St. Cloud straddles the great Mississippi River and enjoys much the same weather as its much larger neighboring city to the south — cold winters, mild summers and cool springtime weather.

On race day (Sep. 5), the average low is 51ºF and the average high is 75ºF.
