Frostbite Half Marathon

Saturday, January 27, 2024 • Starkville, MS

Called “the runner’s race” by the Starkville running club — which started the race back in 1984 — the Frostbite Half Marathon marks its 38th annual running in January 2024 of offering runners and joggers in this central Mississippi community a wintertime road race event.

Run along the 13.1 miles of rolling hills of Starkville, the home of Mississippi State University, the race starts and finished on Main Street in Starkville, where a post-party with free food and beverages for all event participants.

More than 235 runners crossed the finish line at the 2016 running of the race — including teams for the two-person relay — which runners must complete within 2 hours, 45 minutes.

I ran the race this year. I traveled down from Memphis to run this race in order to cross MS off my 50 states list. The race itself is a challenging course and a pretty good run. However, this race is not for the first time half marathoner as there is limited course support, no port-a-potties on the course, and the course is on an open two lane highway with very little median that has a speed limit of 55 mph. There were only 3 water stops on this course, so bringing your own water is recommended if you are used to stops at each mile. At the end you can use the fitness center’s showers and locker rooms to change, so that was very nice. For the future, I would recommend at least having a police officer patrolling back and forth on the course to monitor the runners, since having the race on an open 55mph road with no first aid or course monitor is pretty dangerous.

This year’s race was my first Frostbite Half. I was very pleased with the course and the support. It might feel odd to run on a highway but the traffic both directions was respectful of the runners being present. IMO, there were plenty of water stations for a cool weather race, and there were support vehicles going back and forth along the race route. This is a fast course because my finishing time was 4 mins faster than the Blues Half just 2 weeks earlier.

Just checking as to why the late start on this race (noon). For the past 3 years, it’s started first thing in the morning (7 or 8 a.m.).
