Superhero Half Marathon & Relay

Sunday, May 19, 2024 • Morris Township, NJ • Course Map

Runners wearing Superman capes, t-shirts and boots — as well as plenty of other superhero costumes like Batman, Robin, and some creative hero costumes that weren’t exactly well-known but were still “super” — came out to run last year’s annual Superhero Half Marathon & Relay, which saw more than 1,600 runners cross the finish line.

The race follows a point-to-point course that made its debut in 2015, with a new starting line near the parking lot of Atlantic Health System at the intersection of South Street and Southgate Parkway. The race later finishes just off the trail in Loantaka Park, in the parking lot from South Street.

In between the start and the finish lines, runners will first head into the residential streets and neighborhoods just south of Morristown and Morris Township near Spring Brook Golf Course, with stretches along Spring Brook Road, Harter Road and James Street.

Next, the race brings runners back to the starting line area along Southgate Parkway, and then onto Farok Road for a stretch before turning onto Woodland Avenue.

After bringing runners down Woodland for roughly two-thirds of a mile, the route then turns right onto Kitchell and then left again onto the path that enters Loantaka Brook Park, whose more than 750 acres of green space lie adjacent to densely populated urban areas, and provide a refuge with more than five miles of hiking, walking and running trails as well as softball and baseball fields.

Runners remain on the path that winds through Loantaka Park for just over a mile until they meet up with Loantaka Way, where they turn right and head along Loantaka for roughly half a mile.

At the intersection with Spring Valley Road, runners turn right again and follow it northeast all the way up to Blackberry Lane, where they turn left and follow a U-shaped curve that winds along Blackberry, Laura Lane and Southgate Parkway before bringing runners back to South Street, which brings them back again to Dwyer Lane and Fanok Road.

The starting line lies ahead, which lets runners know they’ve completed the first half and now need only to repeat the route they’ve just run to finish the half marathon. As for the “superhero” theme of the race, it’s all in good fun but also for a great cause, as the race benefits the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and its efforts to support spinal cord injury research.
