Chips & Salsa Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

Sunday, September 10, 2023 • Albuquerque, NM • Course Map

One of a number of half-marathon race events held in the Albuquerque area each year, the Chips & Salsa Half Marathon takes runners on a course that crosses the Rio Grande on its way over to Rio Rancho, N.M., and back again to the Alameda side of the river.

As you might expect from the city that hosts the annual International Balloon Festival, the terrain for the course is almost all completely flat and fast.

The out-and-back course for the race starts and finishes near the Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School.

Run at an altitude of about 5,010 feet above sea level, the flat out-and-back course is considered an excellent choice for runners looking to set personal record times — at the 2005 running of the race, no fewer than 13 participants broke 1 hour, 10 minutes for the 13.1 miles of the half. Though only four runners broke that mark in 2007, more than 20 runners crossed the finish line in less than 1 hour, 30 minutes.

The half marathon features a course time limit of 3 1/2 hours.

Race Weather & Climate

Late summer/early fall weather in Albuquerque can be highly variable but tends to stay relatively mild to warm, as September has brought record temperatures here as low as 30°F (in 1903) and as high as 100°F (in 1979).

On race day (Sept. 10), the average low is 58ºF and the average high is 84ºF.
