Nestled here in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, the tiny town of Savannah — home to a population of just over 1,700 year-round residents — is set to play host this summer to the annual Montezuma Half Marathon & 5K, a race that will take runners along the grassy trails inside the Howland Island Wildlife Management Area.
This 3,500-acre island actually lies inside the Northern Montezuma Wetlands Complex and the nearby Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, and get their name from the Montezuma Marshes, a small, 100-acre area of swamps and marshes that have been protected since the early 1970s for being one of the best-preserved and undisturbed swamp woodlands areas in the Northeast.
Runners are set to start and finish the race at the Audubon Center on State Road 89, which lies along the western edge of Howland Island. The island has been protected since the 1930s and today offers visitors a mix of woodland forests, grasslands and marshes, as well as plentiful hiking, biking and running trails throughout.
Those are the trails runners will use in the race, and organizers say they’re “dirt trails with a mowed grassy center,” so they’ll likely be easy on your feet as you tramp through this park’s low-lying flood plains and gently rolling hills.
The area is something of a mecca for bird-watching, as more than 200 species of birds have been found living inside the park.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in western Upstate New York, about 140 miles east of Buffalo and roughly an hour’s drive from Rochester, Savannah typically sees some of its warmest weather of the year in June, with temperatures ranging from the high 50s to the low 80s.
On race day (June 4), the average low is 59ºF and the average high is 80ºF.
