Sunday, September 30, 2018 • Corning, NY • Course Map
Run through the wine country of the New York Finger Lakes region along a very gradual downhill course, much of which unfolds along the winding Chemung River, Corning’s Wineglass Marathon & Half Marathon takes runners on a point-to-point course that finishes across the Centerway Bridge, and features a run past the famed Corning Museum of Glass.
The race — which is limited to a total of 5,800 runners, with 2,800 for the full marathon and 3,000 for the half marathon — has two separate starting lines, one for those running 26.2 miles and the other for those running 13.1 miles.
The full marathoners start in front of the offices of Philips Lightning in nearby Bath, while those running the half start at the mid-way point of the full marathon, in the nearby town of Campbell.
From the half marathon start in Campbell, runners follow the second half of the full marathon route all the way to the finish, through the communities of Coopers Plains, Painters Post and Riverside all the way into Corning.
The course stays roughly in parallel with the river as well as the interstate for most of the way, and in fact takes runners off the roadway and onto the paved Painted Post Trail for about a mile between mile markers 9 and 10.
Throughout most of the course, the route runs through a combination of quaint neighborhoods and riverside farm fields, and runners in the half can expect to make four bridge crossings over the course of the race — twice over the Chemung River and once across a smaller tributary, and then the final bridge crossing comes when runners are making their way across the Centerway Bridge in Corning to the finish line in Riverfront Centennial Park.
Thanks to both its location and the fact that it’s a mostly downhill course, the Wineglass Marathon and Half has been called one of the “speediest” marathons in the country by the readers of Runner’s World magazine.
