Run as a benefit for the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, the annual autumn Mason Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk takes runners on an out-and-back route that starts and finishes at Mason High School, and runs along the edge of the nearby Kings Island Amusement Park, where the rides and roller coasters can be seen from the race course along the roadway.
Interestingly, when you run the streets of this largely flat southwestern Ohio city of about 20,000 residents, you’ll be running through an area where some pretty instantly recognizable names have spent time growing up — including actor George Clooney, famed LPGA golfer Nancy Lopez, longtime New York Mets pitching great Tom Seaver and former ESPN and now NBC sportscaster Dan Patrick, among others.
Filled with a combination of gentle, rolling hills and plenty of long, flat stretches along paved bike and running paths, the race starts at Mason High School, just off Mason Montgomery Road.
From there, the course takes runners first north along Mason Montgomery and then onto the bike paths just before reaching the intersection with Main Street.
Once runners make their way onto the paved paths, they then head around toward Kings Mill Road and then south into Corwin Nixon Park (its full name is Corwin Nixon Pine Hill Lakes Park), where the course then follows a loop around the lake in the center of the park.
Runners make their way around the lake’s perimeter and then up onto Foxfield Drive, where they make a quick U-shaped turn and then head left onto Foxfield.
The next section of the race takes the field back onto Mason Montgomery Road for a brief stretch before turning left onto Tylersville Road, which runners will then follow for roughly the next two miles.
Just before reaching the Interstate 71 highway, runners then turn left onto the pathway that parallels the highway, for a roughly three-mile out-and-back stretch that features views of Kings Mill Amusement Park just over the shoulder in both directions, going out and coming back.
Runners then turn back onto Tylersville Road for the last few miles of the race, which bring them back up Mason Montgomery Road north and then over into Corwin Nixon Park for a brief stretch before the final mile, which brings the field back up to Mason High School for the finish line.
