Open to both runners and walkers, Oregon’s Helvetia Half Marathon & 10K takes runners on hilly, challenging course on rolling paved country roads along the northern rim of the Tualatin Valley in the West Hills of the Portland area.
From the starting line at the Hillsboro Stadium athletic complex, just off Bennett Street, runners follow the first mile of the course westward along Bennett, 235th Avenue and Huffman Street, and turn again northward onto 242nd Avenue, which they follow for a long straightaway north for the next few miles as it becomes Helvetia Road.
The course follows a counter-clockwise out-and-back loop route up along Helvetia with a quick loop on Jacobsen and West Union Road before meeting up once again with Helvetia and follows the turn as Northwest Helvetia Road heads west, and then follows a brief stretch along Jackson Quarry Road to the half-way point turnaround.
After the turnaround point, participants follow Jackson Quarry southward all the way to West Union Road, where runners turn left and head south along Union to Groveland Road. The field follows Groveland southward and eastward as runners turn south again and head back toward the finish at the stadium, where the runners and walkers cross the finish line on the football field’s 30-yard line.
Along the way, participants will run across gravel surfaces on portions of the route, though most of the race is run on paved surfaces.
The first two to three miles and the last four to five miles of the race route are mostly fast and flat, with a few gently rolling hills here and there.
In between are the race’s most significant hills, as the course jumps from about 200 feet above sea level around the mile 4 marker to over 400 feet between mile markers 4 and 5; there are also significant hills around mile marker 6 and between miles 7 and 8.
