Summer Half Classic

Saturday, June 22, 2019 • Coburg, OR • Course Map

A largely flat and occasionally gently rolling course among the rural countryside of Oregon’s Willamette River Valley awaits the runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes who converge on this small town every summer for the annual Summer Half Classic (known as the Run in the Country Half Marathon before 2016).

Participants line up for the start of the race in Coburg’s Pavilion Park at the corner of McKenzie and Harrison Streets, and from there head through the quaint streets and neighborhoods of this small town that’s registered as a National Historic District, thanks to the numerous historic homes built with the signature Carpenter Gothic architecture of the late 1800s.

After a few turns through the streets of this town of just over 1,000 residents, runners then head onto Willamette Street, a stretch of the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway and Coburg Bottom Loop Road, where they begin the clockwise loop portion of the race that takes them out into the rural farm fields just west of town, in the direction of the Willamette River.

The course keeps runners and walkers on the loop road, Coburg Road and Powerline Road for the next several miles, all the way north to the right turn onto Herman Road.

The course heads east for about two miles along Herman before turning right again, this time onto the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, a paved cycling and running path that stretches more than 130 miles between the Champoeg State Heritage Area south of Portland at its northernmost point, all the way south to Armitage Park near Eugene.

Runners will spend nearly the next four miles along the bikeway, which unfolds through a combination of rural countryside, vineyards, small towns and farms here in the western part of the state.

Once they make it back into Coburg, runners turn off the bikeway and back onto Coburg Road, which they follow east for a few blocks before turning off Diamond Street and into Norma Pfeiffer Park, where the race finish line lies.
