Note: the 2018 race has been cancelled.

Described by race organizers as “the race you have been clamoring for,” Philadelphia’s ODDyssey Half Marathon promises a race that offers both a challenging course as well as a, well, “odd” experience in the best meaning of the word.

Along with the 13.1-mile race route through the trails and park roads of Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River Loop and Fairmount Park, runners will also get a chance to show their “odd” side with costume contests and obstacles along the course, just to make it more fun.

From the starting line on Memorial Hall Green near the city’s Please Touch Museum for children, the race takes runners on an out-and-back loop course first along the park roadways and then out onto the trails that run alongside the river.

Runners make their way past the Philadelphia Zoo as they run parallel to the Schuykill Expressway and then along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which is the start of a long north-south stretch of the race course.

This stretch of the race includes some of its most scenic views as well as some of its flattest terrain, as runners head along the paths that parallel the river as they wind their way eastward and then, after the south turnaround point, northward along the trails.

Runners keep following the paths northward as MLK Drive winds its way northward again, all the way up toward the intersection with Falls Bridge that crosses over the river. Once they reach the north turnaround point, runners then head back southward toward the museum.

The final few miles cover some of the same scenery runners have just crossed through in the earlier stretch, just this time they’ll be heading south along the River Loop back down toward Memorial Hall Green for the race finish back at the children’s museum.

There is one uphill stretch near the finish, but much of the race course is fast and flat, thanks to its location along the river.
