Set for its 10th and final annual running this year on a route that runs from the Arbuckles Mountains into Ardmore here in southern Oklahoma, the A2A Arbuckles to Ardmore Race for Mercy features a 26.2-mile, 20.6-mile, 13.1-mile and a 5K race, for a fundraiser to benefit southern Oklahoma’s Mercy Memorial Health Center hospital and its health care clinics in the counties around Ardmore.
Both the half and the full marathons take runners along Highway 77 between the mountains and the city of Ardmore, a highway that once served as the main route of travel between Houston and Dallas south in Texas, and Oklahoma City to the north, as well as all of the towns and cities in between.
Today, the highway remains one of the region’s most scenic drives, and is known perhaps best for its tight turns and steep mountain grades.
Runners in the half marathon — officially titled the Valero Fast Half marathon — will start their race along the county line that separates Murray and Carter counties, a few miles after the start of the full marathon, which begins at Turner Falls Park, just off Interstate 35.
From the half marathon start at the intersection of Highway 77 and East 1820 Road, those running the half follow a long, steady straightaway all the way south along 77 into the city of Ardmore, to the finish line at Noble Stadium, the home of the Ardmore High School Tigers football team.
Anyone looking to set a personal record time could do a lot worse than the A2A Half Marathon, as the course follows a mostly downhill route from the Arbuckles into Ardmore — with the exception of a final uphill stretch over the last few miles as runners are making their way along the last three miles of the race into the finish.
More than 800 runners crossed the finish line in all three races combined in 2016, including just over 360 finishers in the half marathon alone.
