Overview

Originally planned for Saturday, January 10, 2026, the Apex Half Marathon was billed by Happy Trails Running as their “hardest” half marathon yet—an audacious winter race up Butterfield Canyon in Herriman, UT, designed to be challenging, scenic, and exhilarating.

❄️ What Was Promised

With the race slated to run on frozen, vehicle-free canyon roads, runners were to tackle around 2,200 feet of elevation gain over 13.1 miles through snowy winter terrain. As the course lacked aid stations, participants were required to self-support with hydration, snowshoes, and essential gear—making this half marathon a true test of resolve and preparation.

The optional 10K offered a shorter, yet still demanding alternative through the lower canyon. Both distances were billed to begin at 9:00 AM MST (10K at 9:30 AM), with mandatory shuttles and snowshoe use due to winter trail access. Swag included high-quality performance shirts and custom medals. Post-race refreshments and awards were part of the experience.

⚠️ Status Update

Despite strong anticipation, the Apex Half Marathon has been officially cancelled for its 2026 date. The event page notes the cancellation with no alternative date currently available. Details on any refund or future planning are not yet posted.

Still, the Apex concept reflects Happy Trails’ ethos: boutique race offerings in unique Utah settings, capped fields, and unforgettable course design—when they run.

Course Description

The Half Marathon starts just past the gate at Butterfield Canyon Trailhead. This gate will be closed due to the snow this canyon experiences every winter. With any luck there will be a fresh dusting of snow. Nothing is more pretty and rewarding than snowshoeing on fresh untouched snow.

This challenging course will have you climbing the first 6.55 miles up this beautiful canyon taking in amazing views. This is a special canyon and we just love being able to run it with no vehicles.

No aid stations on this course. We recommend bringing a hydration bottle or flask. This is a very challenging course due to the elevation gain!

13.1 miles and +2,267 ft elevation total

100% canyon road closed to vehicles
