If you’re a NASCAR or racing fan, you’ll get a kick out of the Bootlegger Half Marathon, which follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes in front of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame here in this small north Georgia city, a museum that traces the roots of auto racing from the backwoods of the mountains of Georgia all the way to the present day.

Runners start the race at the museum, which lies near the Dawsonville City Hall on Highway 53 near the center of town.

From there, the course heads out on a winding route through the city as well as on the roadways that lie just outside town, along a combination of paved roads and paved running, walking and biking trails, especially in the second half of the race in the stretches that take runners just off Bruce Road.

Organizers note that there will be live music and entertainment at the start and finish line area to cheer runners on when they’re leaving the starting line, and add that “the course is a combination of nice fast flats and some rolling hills.

Participants will have one short challenging hill to overcome about mile 11, where the course takes a sharp uphill along Tucker Avenue toward the Dawson County Courthouse. The remainder of the race features a stretch past the city’s library, schools and the museum to bring runners across the finish line.

Proceeds from the event benefit the locally based Friends of Dawson County Parks, which provides scholarships for local children to participate in sports and athletic leagues in Dawsonville.
