Saturday, June 18, 2016 • Oakland, CA
Part of a series of running events hosted around the San Francisco Bay area and Northern California throughout the year by the race management group Coastal Trail Runs, Oakland’s Canyon Meadow Trail Run features a wide range of distances for every runner, from the five-mile and 13.1-mile half marathon distance to the 26.2-mile full marathon, 30K and even a 50K trail race.
All five trail runs take place inside Redwood Regional Park, a more than 1,800-acre park that lies just to the east of downtown Oakland. Home to large forests of its namesake tree the Sequoia sempervirens — also known as the coastal redwood — the park also features plenty of other evergreen trees as well as rare wildlife like the golden eagle and the Alameda striped racer snake, in addition to the plentiful deer, rabbits, raccoons and squirrels that roam the park.
Runners will follow out-and-back routes for each of the races, all of which start and finish at the Owl Picnic Area inside the park, just off Redwood Road. From there, runners in the half marathon make a counter-clockwise loop along the trails known as the East Ridge and West Ridge trails that snake around the edges of the park, taking runners all the way from the park’s eastern edge to the Skyline Gate staging area near its western border.
The West Ridge trail brings runners through the southern section of the park, taking runners along sections bounded by tall redwoods all around as well as streams and creeks along the way. Runners will make their way past the Chabot Space and Science Center, which lies near the park’s southern edge, on their way eastward back along the West Ridge trail toward the start/finish area, where they’ll cross the finish line where they started.
All races start at 8:00 AM, and race organizers note that runners will need to bring along $5 for the park entrance fee on their way to the race. Because parking inside the park is limited, runners also are encouraged to carpool for the race. Just over 400 runners crossed the finish line in all five races combined at the event’s 2015 running, including 180Â finishers in the half marathon alone.
