Hosted by AdventureCORPS® (creators of the iconic Badwater series), the Cape Fear Marathon & Half Marathon, presented by Mount to Coast, returns to the isolated beauty of Bald Head Island. Starting at historic Old Baldy Lighthouse, participants embark on a scenic course weaving through the island’s car-free roads and wooded trails, before encountering a dramatic 0.75-mile beach stretch around Cape Fear. Half marathoners complete 1½ island loops, while full marathoners master three loops, accumulating 2.2 miles of sand running and about 24 miles on island paths.
The experience blends adventure and craftsmanship: a USATF-certified course, cupless format (bring your own reusable cup), and three aid station hubs (entered 4–9 times depending on distance), stocked with Tailwind, gels, fruit, and salty snacks. Post-race celebration includes a burger-and-beer party at Jules’ Salty Grub, plus swag that includes a race cup, tech tee, cap, bib board, buff, sunglasses, and a finisher medal.
What sets it apart:
- A remote coastal marathon experience on barrier island roads and wild beach terrain.
- A unique Beach + Road combo with low-traffic, historic island loops.
- Integrated festival-feel finish right at the marina, with local food and music.
- A direct connection to local conservation, via the Bald Head Island Conservancy.
🌟 Why It Stands Out
Cape Fear blends coastal serenity, island history, and controlled adventure into a race format unlike most destination halves. With its sandy beach loops, bottle-free running, and festival-style finish, it appeals to endurance athletes wanting both spectacle and solace. The Old Baldy Lighthouse start, beach passage, and festive community vibe make every mile memorable. Run on one of the East Coast’s cleanest beaches, then cool off at the finish with burgers, beer, and marshland views.
