A few hundred runners and walkers cross the finish line each year at Terre Haute’s Crossroads Half Marathon — formerly known as the Blues at the Crossroads Half Marathon — which will use the same flat and fast point-to-point route from recent years.
The race celebrates the Terre Haute area’s history as the “original” crossroads of America from the early days of horse and wagon travel, thanks to its location along what was once known as the old National Road (now U.S. Highway 41) between Indianapolis and the city of Vandalia in nearby Illinois. It’s along that old National Road that a portion of the race takes place.
Runners start the half marathon at the actual location of where the historic crossroads lies, at the corner of 7th Street and Ohio Street, near the southern edge of the campus of Indiana State University.
From there, runners follow an out-and-back course that takes them in a mostly eastward direction, toward the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Lost Creek township, which lies just east of the city.
Mostly flat for its first several miles, the race unfolds along Terre Haute’s paved city streets, including the historic Ohio Boulevard for the first couple of miles.
The course then turns left and heads north along Brown Avenue in the direction of the Indiana Trail, which takes runners around Indiana State University’s Memorial Stadium, and then heads out onto portions of the paved National Road Heritage Trail, which stretches nearly six miles along a former east-west railroad line that once connected Terre Haute with Indianpolis.
The course keeps runners on the old National Road Heritage Trail for most of the race — from about miler marker 3 through mile marker 11 — as it winds its way eastward toward the turnaround point in nearby East Glenn, near the Mewhinney Cemetery at the corner of Wabash Avenue and North Chamberlain Street.
From there, runners make the turn and retrace their steps along the paved trail pathways all the way back toward the Indiana State campus, remaining on the trail until they reach the intersection with North 13th Street.
There, the course turns off the trail and heads onto Sycamore Street, where runners will cross the finish line at 11th and Sycamore, just a few blocks north of where they started.
