During the Florida SkyDive Ultra Run, the craziest part isn’t hitting your mileage goal—which may be 100 miles, 100K, 50 miles, 50K, marathon, half marathon, or 10K—but rather how you get to the start. Which, in the case of this race, is by skydiving from 13,500 feet.
You’re guaranteed to set a PR for your fastest mile (and see the most elevation change!) during the “world’s first ever Skydiving Ultra.”
The rest of the race is straightforward. Departing from Skydive Spaceland’s airfield, participants will follow a 7.25 mile loop around the airport, following dirt and grass roads as they tour the local sights, including local sugar cane fields, canals, and lots of wildlife.
Runners will pass an aid station midway through the loop and have the opportunity to return to their dropped bags every lap as they circle back through the start/finish line. A variety of supplies—fruit, salty and sweet snacks, sandwiches, soda, salt pills, Vaseline, and the like—are available after each loop to keep you hydrated, lubricated, and refreshed.
You’re encouraged to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect you on this exposed course—even though it’s winter in Florida, the sun can be intense.
Friends and family are also invited to join in the fun! Even if they don’t want to race, your support team can register for a skydive of their own. The opposite is also true—if you want to run any distance without skydiving, you can sign up for a running-only event.
The race’s atmosphere is encouraging and fun, as support teams watch their runners and participate in a variety of activities available for kids and families. (Pets are welcome, too!) For those accompanying an ultra runner in it for the long haul, camping, barbecue grills, bathrooms, and showers are available.
Race Weather & Climate
January in Clewiston is generally mild and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 53°F to 74°F. However, temperatures at the 13,500-ft. start of the skydive are about 25° cooler, so warm pants, a long sleeve, or even a windbreaker are encouraged.
