Set for its 8th annual running along the trails around the San Diego area’s Hodges Lake Reservoir, which lies just north of downtown in nearby Escondido, the Foxy Trail Half Marathon is the second of four trail half marathons in a series known as the Dirt Devil Trail Running Series, which takes place throughout the year in San Diego.

At the Foxy Trail Half Marathon — the second of the series’ seven events, which also features 5K, 10K and 15K races from January through October — runners follow an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at Rancho Bernardo Community Park, located just off Interstate 15 near Lake Hodges.

From there, runners head out on a course that takes them largely along the northern shoreline of the lake, along its North Shore trail.

Runners make a bridge crossing twice during the race — in the early going, just after the leaving the starting line, where they cross the new stone suspension bridge that leads from Rancho Bernardo Park over to the North Shore trail, and then again a second time when they’re on the return route back toward the finish line.

The race organizers at Dirt Devil Racing point out that because this is a trail race, the distance isn’t quite exactly a half marathon — this race is 13.3 miles, which they add runners should use the extra two tenths of a mile for their “cool down” from the run.

The course is set to remain open for 4 hours; finisher awards will not be given out for runners crossing the finish line after the 4-hour cutoff time, they add.

Race Weather & Climate

Famous for its mild weather conditions virtually year-round, San Diego typically sees mild to moderately warm and usually very dry weather in April, when the city’s average monthly temperatures range between 68°F and 56°F.

On race day (April 28), the average low is 57ºF and the average high is 68ºF.
