active reg buttonWith its more than 18,000 acres of undeveloped wilderness filled with hiking trails, streams, ponds, densely wooded forests and wetland areas, Florida’s Starkey Wilderness Preserve features an off-the-beaten-path experience for the 7th annual running of the FrankenFooter Half Marathon & 5K race, both of which follow out-and-back courses along paved trails through the Starkey Wilderness Park just outside New Port Richey.

Located roughly 40 miles north of the Tampa Bay area, and just east of New Port Richey, the park’s pristine environmental treasures will be on display throughout the race, which starts and finishes near the park headquarters just off Wilderness Park Boulevard.

From there, runners in both races will follow paved trails through the park for the entire race route — both courses, organizers note, have very flat terrain throughout the race, with really no hills to speak of.

And since the race takes place on Halloween weekend, the event organizers encourage all who would like to, to dress out in costume for the race — you can even register for a costume category for the race, as the organizers will conduct a costume contest in a variety of categories for the race.

Organizers add that both runners and walkers are welcome to participate in the half marathon, provided that you can finish the race’s 13.1 miles within the course time limit of 3 hours, 30 minutes — after the cutoff, there will no longer be support provided along the course for the runners and walkers.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along Florida’s Gulf coast, just a short drive north from Tampa Bay and roughly 37 miles northwest of Tampa, the city of New Port Richey typically experiences mild to moderately warm and sometimes hot weather conditions in the mid fall, as October has brought record temperatures here as low as 42°F (in 1989) and as high as 94°F (in 1960).

On race day (Oct. 23), the average low is 63ºF and the average high is 83ºF.
