The crest of the Fred Hartman Bridge overlooking the waters of Tabbs Bay and Black Duck Bay, just miles from nearby Houston, marks the turning point of the Jail Break Run, which is set for its 11th annual running in the late winter season of 2022 here in this Texas Gulf coast city that lies just to the east of its much larger neighbor.

Designed as a fundraiser for two local nonprofits — the Baytown Municipal Police Officers Association and the Marcus Lee Zaruba Criminal Justice Foundation Scholarship — the race is set to follow a loop course that starts and finishes at Lee College, just north of downtown Baytown.

From there, runners head east and south along Texas Avenue and Evergreen Road for the race’s first several miles, with few turns and very little elevation changes. After turning right and then left to reach Main Street, runners continue along Main Street before turning left. This turn starts the stretch of the race that brings them around to the Fred Hartman Bridge, the 1,250-ft. cable-stayed bridge that straddles the Houston Ship Channel and connects Baytown with nearby LaPorte.

Once they make their way onto the bridge, runners head up along the rising incline of the bridge to its highest point overlooking the bay. There, they’ll make the turn and then head back downhill toward Baytown, turning back onto Main Street and and Robert C. Lanier Drive before cruising onto Market Street and across the finish line back at Lee College.

The race is open to both runners and walkers — there will be a 6:30 AM starting time for those walking the course, followed by the 7:00 AM starting time for the runners. The race time limit is four hours, so the race course will close at 11:00 AM and re-open to traffic.
