Overview

Join this scenic springtime race on April 25, 2026, where runners retrace part of the historic Sacramento Rail Trail—a converted Southern Pacific Railroad line beginning at the foot of Shasta Dam. This flat, fast course runs alongside the Sacramento River and Keswick Lake, offering a serene backdrop and cool morning air—a refreshing contrast to SoCal’s coastal routes.

The half marathon (13.1 mi) begins at 8:00 AM PDT, followed by the 10K/5K at 8:15 AM. All races start near the Chappie OHV area, shortly after crossing the iconic dam, and follow the trail out and back. The route is very flat, with minimal elevation change—a prime layout for personal bests. A cap of 350 runners ensures a low-key field and a relaxed atmosphere.

Race logistics are streamlined for participant convenience: packet pickup is available Friday (11 AM–3 PM) at Redding Fleet Feet Store, with race-day check-in opening at 7 AM at the dam area. Finishers of the half get a commemorative medal, and there are overall and age-group awards for all distances.

Whether you’re aiming for a fast spring PR or simply looking to enjoy a mellow trail morning, Nail the Rail delivers scenic river views, reliable organization, and a cost-effective outing in the shadow of Shasta Dam.
