Note: The 2021 race has been cancelled.
You’ll get to finish the race along the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore when you run the Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon, Half Marathon or Relay on Sunday morning, or the ShapingNJ 5K on Saturday morning, at an event that celebrates its 22nd annual running this spring.
The race features inspirational views of the oceanfront along much of the course and as runners are approaching the finish line at the Long Branch Ocean Promenade on the Jersey shore, and takes runners on a 13.1-mile tour of the neighborhoods and commercial districts of the town and nearby Monmouth Beach.
Known by past runners for its scenic, mostly flat course (no surprise as it’s close to sea level, near the ocean), the race is also known for colorful characters who’ve run in past years such as “Larry the Lighthouse,” who actually runs inside a cardboard lighthouse perched atop his shoulders.
For the half marathon, runners start the point-to-point course in Monmouth Park along Park Road, just west of the Monmouth Race Track. From there, they’ll run around the Wolf Hill Recreation Area and through several neighborhoods in Oceanport and Monmouth Beach, with many stretches featuring views of the water.
The course’s most significant hills take participants over bridges and across water at three points (miles 3, 4 and 8), and the last three miles offer spectacular views of the waves crashing on the beach.
Runners will finish the race along the boardwalk next to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, by running nearly a mile and a half along the shoreline before they cross the finish line.
Both the half marathon and full marathon courses are USATF-certified, organizers note, and the full marathon course is a Boston Marathon qualifier.
