Overview

The North Country Trail Run celebrates its 26th edition this August in Michigan’s Manistee National Forest, offering a weekend of epic trail challenges spanning a 50 mile ultra, 50 km, marathon, and two half marathons (Saturday + Sunday). The half marathon debuts its 16th year, the Sunday version its 11th, weaving 13.1 miles of rugged single-track forest trails with 2,417 ft of elevation gain—rolling hills, roots, pine needles, beach sand, and sweeping views above the forest canopy.

Runners start in waves on Saturday at 8:30–8:50 am, tackling “1/2‑mile Hill” early and facing continual ups and downs interspersed with supportive aid stations every 3–4 miles. Water points are well-stocked and volunteers cheer from forest clearings, lending energy to every pitch. Finishers earn the largest half-marathon medal in the nation, along with collectables like sweatshirts, hats, mugs, and a root‑beer float ticket—no expo needed.

What makes this race stand out is its club-like camaraderie and wild-forest immersion. Participants love the DIY‑style trail staging, epic finish‑area celebration, and unique sense of accomplishment that comes from earning one of the hugest medals around. As one long‑time attendee reflects, “Aid stations are fully stocked…don’t forget to thank the volunteers!”.

Course Description

13.1 miles of trails can be scary. But from the very first mile of the North Country half marathon you get hooked. Starting out and heading up what runners call 1/2 mile Hill (at approximately 2.4 miles) was an amazing rewarding challenge with such great twist and turns giving new exciting ups and downs and views the whole way. Hearing the enthusiasm coming from all the aid stations along the way (every 3-4 miles) gives runners hope and encouragement knowing there was great selections and wonderful people at each station making the next section all the easier. You never know 13 miles could have such a variety of terrain; from beach sand to pine needles, tall grass and back to gravel, oh and roots too. When climbing the last hill at about 12 miles runners say they feel like they’ve gone to heaven, the view at the top makes you forget all about the past 12 miles and looking forward to floating down that last hill through that last mile, more beach sand, gravel and pines and ready for the after party sporting the biggest medal you’ve ever earned. So much fun, most runners sit waiting for signups to open to guarantee you do it again in 12 months.
