Set for its 9th annual running this year along the streets of this city on the San Francisco Peninsula that lies roughly halfway between San Francisco to the north and San Jose to the south, Redwood City’s OktobeRun Half Marathon & 5K is set to take runners on an out-and-back race that’s timed to coincide with the city’s annual Peninsula Oktoberfest.

Runners will start the race at the Port of Redwood City on Seaport Court, near the Seaport Conference Center that overlooks Redwood Creek. From there, the race follows an out-and-back route that heads first eastward through downtown and then out toward the marshes along the shoreline, where runners will head onto the San Francisco Bay Trail for most of the rest of the course.

Stretching some 500 miles all along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay, the Bay Trail takes runners, walkers, bikers and joggers almost immediately from the city into nature, as the trail winds through marshes, tidal wetlands, beaches, fishing piers and public parks along the bay, connecting more than 40 cities along the way.

The OktobeRun half marathon route winds along the stretch of the Bay Trail that lies next to Smith Slough and Steinberger Slough, and is made up of both paved and gravel trails.

This section of the race is just about perfectly flat, unfolding at just a few feet above sea level just after runners pass the mile 2 marker, all the way out to the turnaround point and back, when they pass the mile 11 marker.

The only real hills on the route occur in the first and last miles, as runners make their way through downtown after leaving the starting line and coming in to the finish line.

The scenery along the course will feature a mix of both developed islands like Redwood Shores on one side of the Bay Trail, contrasted with the wetlands and marshlands on the other side, which remain protected from development.

The turnaround point lies at the end of Redwood Shores near Bay Slough, just before runners reach the San Francisco Bay.

Race organizers note that the weather should be ideal for running this time of year in the San Francisco and Redwood City area, as the fall months — September, October and November — are considered the best time of year to visit the Bay area.

While both races are open to runners and walkers, entrants in the half marathon should note that the event features a 4-hour time limit — so as long as you can finish within four hours, you’re welcome to walk the race.
